Well, the highly anticipated PESS Netball Carnival 2008 (2 day event) has finally come to a close and I have to say it was a weekend of heart-stopping action! This year saw us extending the invitation out to ALL schools in Singapore with a female netball team and I have to say the response was astounding! The intensity of every game, coupled with the beautiful performance of every team in the competition over the past 2 days definitely did impress many of our PESS trainee teacher volunteers and for those who have missed it, here is what two of our PESSians have to say.

“Nostalgic moments rushed in. I could recall the days when I used to play netball (on recreational level) back in secondary school. I was “WOW-ing” all the way when I saw some great long passes, “dummy” moves and especially terrific goal shooters. Who says it’s not a beautiful game? I was glad that despite competing with each other, I could see some girls shaking the hands of their competitors after a game and giving some encouragements when a girl injured her leg badly (OUCH!). Some true “Sportswoman” spirit! Well done, girls and congratulations to Tanjong Katong Secondary School for the deserving victory. GO EAST SIDERS! ;)”
- Nadia (Dip PE Year 1)

“Netball from a male’s perspective often seems to invoke images of dainty girls playing a delicate and restrictive sport. However, watching these secondary school girls certainly has debunked this misconception; the girls were athletic, agile and mobile. The skills involved in the netball would certainly be applicable to other team sports. The obvious one would be the sport of Basketball, where the skills of passing, shooting and running are similar to Netball. The runs made by the netball players are similar to Ultimate Frisbee, where these runs would be known as cuts, used to get free of the defender and get free into open space. The acceleration or short burst of speed is a critical aspect in the game of Touch Rugby. (Now, if you’ll excuse me, but I’d like to get back to watching the girls play Netball!)

Well, as you can see for yourself, it was a weekend of sheer women prowess, true sportsmanship & camaraderie. All of this was made possible by the hard work of our 7th PESS Management Committee, coupled with the support from our kind sponsors, the Singapore Sports Council.
Most importantly, I think Congratulations are definitely in order for the winning teams of the Under 14 and Under 16 Category. For those unaware, here are the winning teams!
Last, but definitely not the least. A huge THANK YOU and many many hugs to ALL who helped to make this event a success. Thank you for being there for us and coming down to school so early in the mornings to help us out. We could not have done it without you.
